Five for Friday 10.09

It’s been a long, but quick week. Aside from surviving my bachelor party over the weekend, I headed down to Gillette Stadium for the 2009 Boston Inbound Marketing Summit. Overall the conference was great, met a lot of great folks and for the most part got validation that the ideas that I have been pushing are not crazy but rather the right way to do things. The only gripe that I have now is with MLB. Seriously, a playoff game that starts after 9:30 pm EDT? Well, without the groggy adieu here is this week’s Five for Friday.

Toyota “Terrorizes” Consumers with Creepy E-mail Campaign, Faces Lawsuit – This should probably be filed under two categories: 1. Toyota should have known better and 2. This girl needs new friends. I am not a lawyer, but would assume that Toyota should be insulated from this in some way shape or form. It was the girl’s friends who put her up for the prank. Isn’t this what legal disclaimers were made for?

How to Combat Social Media Skepticism – This comes from Lauren Fernandez (AKA @CubanaLAF) and is a great read for those of us who have to fight the battle of skeptics of social media day in and day out. The comments section has a great debate as well.

Google Sidewiki: BrandJacking? Or the future? –  This one comes via PR Squared and is on a conversation that I had with my manager and SEO team earlier in the week. The tool may serve as a shot across the bow to social networks from Google; however for managing a brand’s online reputation, it serves as potentially harmful addition & has shared my thoughts on this here, but do see both sides.

Has Twitter become a mass medium? – This article was passed along to me from my friend Bob Cargill earlier in the week on Twitter. It is a very good read that goes into the ways that our once simple conversational tool has turned into a rather complex realm filled with SPAM, Scams and corporate pushes.

The social media ban & Why 54% of companies blocking access to social media should knock it off – There are actually two articles referenced here. As you can tell by the titles, the subject matter is the same…54 percent of companies in a survey noted that they block social media sites in the workplace. To this I ask why? It is not going anywhere and the ban actually can help stifle innovation in marketing. How can you enter the conversation if the sites are blocked?
