Five for Friday

Man, this week was a quick one. After enduring a rain-filled last few days of vacation I was back in the Weekend work 2011-10-10 10office for three days before heading off on the road again for a week in the Barcelona office of Vistaprint. It will kill me to be away from Baby and Momma Espo for a week, but I am looking forward to chatting social media with folks across the pond. How was your week? Any big weekend plans? Hopefully it’s a good one and hope you have a great week next week! Enjoy this week’s edition of Five for Friday.

Social Proofing, Snake Oil Agencies And Brands (Oh My) – I love posts that call spades, well spades. This is one that does just that and is an interesting read if you are looking into measurement or looking to hire a digital agency. It may seem like common sense, but it isn’t.

Florida State Players Vote to Ban Social Media – I really like this move by the players at FSU. One of the good things about social media is the access that it gives regular folks access to athletes or brands. Unfortunately passionate fans have turned to Twitter to vent their frustrations at athletes who let them down. While it may suck for pro athletes, they are paid pretty well it has to suck even more for college kids who are looking to use the technology for interacting with other students and friends.

Google Engineer: “Google+ is a Prime Example of Our Complete Failure to Understand Platforms” – File this under “shit that was public” or “social media snafus.” The real problem this shows is a cultural ideal from developers that confirms that Google knows numbers, not people. I guess this guy shows the need for Chris Brogan’s new G+ for business book coming out.

70% of Companies Ignore Customer Complaints on Twitter – These are some interesting stats pulled together by Jay Baer. While I agree with his rationale, I am not surprised at the 70 percent figure. The reason I see this as is that social is just not profitable for many companies and the group of folks complaining will barely give their brand a paper cut. Is it wrong? Probably, but as they say money talks and bullshit walks.

Everything has been done. Give up now. – If you are insecure don’t read this post.
