This has been an odd and busy week. Now I am not talking that being
busy is odd, but rather the temperature in the mid-70’s in Boston. This time of year, that is just off. I also recorded a presentation on measuring and tracking ROI for social media for the Social Customer Virtual Summit on November 10. If you want to check it out, you can register here. Jenny Zesut of Lithium and I have a great conversation that you won’t want to miss. Any big weekend plans? Be safe trick or treating kiddies, my treat to you is this week’s edition of Five for Friday.
Why it’s not really my birthday – One of the things that I never considered with my social media profiles was adding in my birthday. It was easy and hey, folks could remember the date I popped into the world. What I didn’t think about was that with all of the personal data that is given out on these sites, it makes it very easy for a scammer or identity thief to do their job. This is a brilliant piece that I suggest you peep out from Chris Penn.
Social Media Mentions Trending Up on Business Cards – This is a pretty cool report that came out of some research by members of my team with Vistaprint customers. In the past year mentions of social media sites on business cards has risen to nearly four percent of the sampling. Check out the results to see how your favorite site fared.
Debate: Do All Community Managers Need Social Media? – This is an interesting topic on David Spinks’ blog that has gained traction as of late. Is social media needed to have a community manager? I am of the mindset that it isn’t. The main reason being is that social media is mostly rented real estate. Yes you control the content on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc., but who owns the URL and content on the network? The network does. So if it were to go poof, so does your community. Look at a community like Starbucks’, sure they mix social media into the toolset, but My Starbucks Idea is their site. Is it social, sure but the company owns the content.
Can Boston Become the Silicon Valley of Marketing? – You know it would be nice to see Boston become the hub of the new wave of marketing. If you think about it, the concept is not that farfetched. Folks like Chris Brogan, C.C. Chapman, Steve Garfield, Laura Fitton, Ann Handley and Brian Halligan, the subject of this article, already call Boston home.
‘If You Want This Choice Position…’: Seven Virtues of the Perfect Social Media Leader – One of the hottest positions in today’s dire job market has something with social media and specialist/director/evangelist/manager in it. Anyone can set up a social account and claim that they are an expert. How can you tell if they are selling gold or snake oil?
