Is social media right for you?

Word of MouthI grew up in a working class family. My father, William Stefanczyk, owns his own construction company. So to say hard work was something I learned at a young age would be an understatement. Of all the lessons I learned in home building, perhaps the one that stuck with me and impacts me the most today is how Bill markets WMS Construction.

Unlike many contractors in Northern New Jersey, Bill does not advertise. Instead, he relies on referrals and customers sending him repeat business.  Now this may sound foolish in a society where million dollar spots and YellowPage ads are commonplace, but it works for him. He doesn’t dabble in other methods of attracting customers because he’s found a winning formula. He prides himself on flushing out the best work and making every customer, no matter how fussy or small, truly happy with their home improvement.

The reason this really hits home for me is that businesses of all sizes are now jumping into social media – the new-age word of mouth. While I am all for this, I hope that these companies know what they are getting themselves into.

Sure social media is the new buzz word, but it isn’t for every business. Before entering the space, companies should think about why they are getting into the space and if there is an audience for them. Here’s a quick presentation that is one part questionnaire, one part education and one part strategy.

After reading that, do you think social media is right for your organization?
