Five for Friday 12.17.10

Have you finished your Christmas shopping yet? If not, you’ve only got a week left so get your stuff in gear. I have to buy for a few people, but its booze, so I am not worried. Last night was the second annual MegaTweetUp hosted at the Microsoft N.E.R.D. Center and was a blast. Made a bunch of great in-person meetings, but still missed a few folks and am sorry for that and will make up for it. How was your week? Hopefully you get some time off and enjoy this edition of Five for Friday.

Stop Talking About Yourself, Start Talking as Yourself– In his latest post chock-full-o statistics, Dan Zarrella validates the notion of social media being a large cocktail party. The more folks talk about themselves, the more likely they are to see their follower number decrease. Definitely worth giving a good look and some thought to the mindless self promotion.

The loneliest job in business – It used to be that PR was the most thankless job within the walls of a corporation. With the onset of social media and putting a smiling face to a faceless brand, many a flack has been tasked with taking on a different communications role, one of the community managers which may soon become the loneliest job as they’re really on an island.

What Rex Ryan Taught Me About Social Media – I am not going to lie but any time my old drinking buddy is mentioned in the headline of a story I read it. In my time spent with Rex I can attest it was always about people and Jay Baer makes some good tie-ins for social with the rule of: In all interviews, players must acknowledge at least two teammates and one coach.

Homeless man in D.C. uses Facebook, social media to advocate for others like him – This story is really interesting on the fact that the advocate for the cause is not someone donating their time, but rather someone who is living it.  I love the fact that he’s able to use publicly funded resources to enhance the awareness of the cause.

Social Media Marketing: No Overnight Success – This is an interesting read on companies integrating social media into their business as usual or day-to-day operations. While the statistics as a whole don’t shock me, I am still shocked that there is still a large number of companies not measuring their activities. Definitely take the time to read and digest this MarketingProfs story.
