NHL Winter Classic – Branding Genius

As the video above (click here if you can’t view it) notes the Boston sports landscape was completely dedicated to the Boston Bruins’ matinee tilt with the Philadelphia Flyers on New Year’s Day. Making the day extra interesting was the fact that the game was being played on the corners of Brookline Avenue and Landsdowne Streets in Boston at 4 Yawkey Way.

While I could have cared less who won the game (Bruins in OT), the really interesting thing that the NHL did was to remove the Red Sox from historic Fenway Park for the league’s annual Winter Classic. Yes the Green Monster and mound were still visible; the league put the focus on hockey and the NHL brand. Granted it irked some folks who felt like the history and pageantry should have been kept in tact, opening day is still months away and it was a pretty cool day. Here are some images of the outside the historic ballpark taken on New Year’s Eve and Day.

What do you think about the NHL using outdoor venues to expand their global brand?
