Five for Friday

Throughout the day, I read dozens of articles ranging from company 5forfridayinformation to social media trends and PR news to general news/sports to the just plain old weird. Many of them come straight from emails, Twitter or Digg and I pass along as well, but figured that I’d post my top five of the week each Friday with a brief summary. Here’s the first installment – hopefully you enjoy.

Twitter User Ivy Bean Turns 104 Years Old – From Mashable’s front page. The title speaks for itself on this one. Not only is living to 104 impressive in its own right, but to live that long and to be engaging and embracing new technologies is truly amazing. If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to check out the video from CNN in the post.

A New Job Just a Tweet Away – This article from the WSJ is interesting on a number of levels. The first and most glaring is that the recruiting industry is now looking into utilizing social networking to get the word out there in a new medium. On a business level, I wonder if this will become a specialized Twitter feed that the Monsters of the world would look into creating a similar job page for clients as an additional revenue stream or if this is another way where businesses can cut back some expenses and target the way that their job listings get out there.

Mad Consumers Take to the Net – This article came to me by way of @jaykeith. Working the social media channels for my company, I know how frustrated some customers may be. This image collage (seven slides) goes through some of the most memorable customer service snafus that have made it to the web. I am sure that you’ve heard of one or two of these. My favorite is the AOL cancellation as I had to go through that rabbit hole in college.

How charities harness social media for a social impact – By way of @prsarahevans Commentz – if you haven’t subscribed yet, check it out here. This article to me speaks volumes about human nature and how despite a recession, people are willing to give to those less fortunate of them. It also puts the emphasis on the SOCIAL aspect of sites like Facebook and Twitter that are easily lost at times.

Does Technology Make us All-Knowing? – Great post up from Lauren Fernandez (aka @CubanaLAF) on 20-somethings being tasked with managing companies reputations within the social space. Not only thought provoking, but also relevant to what most of us are doing in both the PR and SM space.

Bonus weird story of the week

Shark is a real dickhead – This is a video that popped up on my Digg Firefox application and I couldn’t help but pass along (to hell with PC). The title would have you think that the shark is ornery or simply attacking a boat or unsuspecting swimmer ala Jaws, well in this case the title is deceiving as this shark is gnawing on a toy that should be kept in private.
