Focus group

On Tuesday evening, I was invited to take part in a focus group for New Balance. I am a large fan of the company’s shoes and when I saw the invite from Social Sports Boston, I jumped at the chance to take part in the group.

With my company, I have participated in and helped screen people in focus groups. It is an interesting excersise for a company to get an insight into the minds of their customers in real time situations.  With an incentive to participate (a free pair of kicks in this case), the test subjects have no reason to give anything but a honest opinion.

I am not sure what I can or cannot say, but the exercise was beneficial to me outside of their research. Looking at shoes and giving honest insight into them allowed me to see how I and about 10 other guys looked at shoes when shopping for them. Some emotions were some that I have and others were drastically different like buying shoes for features marathoners look for.

It also gave me a unique look into the way that people see a particular brand. While I love the NB brand, others were not as open or giving. We also got to look at some new designs, which were both cool and fresh, while providing feedback on them.

Hopefully the feedback that we gave can help them make a better sneaker.

I can’t wait to see the results.
