Why I am glad social media wasn’t around 9/11/01

A lot has changed in my life, and in the world since the morning of September 11, 2001. Back then I was in college working in the mail room trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. In the 11 years since, I have lived in a number of states, got married and had a son.

We have also seen the Internet grow from a budding phenomenon into a fully-integrated social ecosystem. While I love social media, I am very happy that it was not around back in 2001. Here are some deeper thoughts on the subject:

I really appreciate your insights… And you are right, I think that somehow our quest for real-time, social information has eroded our respect for the people who are most impacted by tragic events.

  16. AmyVernon
    September 11, 2012 | 10:58 am

@krisis I strongly disagree. I still worked for a traditional newspaper org that day, and we had reporters on the ground as the towers fell. We had a direct line in to the FDNY because one of our reporters was a former NYC firefighter and all the parents and loved ones of people who worked in the towers certainly weren’t looking to MeFi for information about what had happened. We not only put out a special edition (as most newspapers did that day), but updated the website consistently throughout the day, with sourced, verified information as well as news and photos from the scene.

geoffliving It wouldn’t have been pretty. Hell we see hate popping up now because restaurants or small business owners support one candidate over another, let alone being of a religion that an extremist group brought bad press. And look I am sure all of us said something that they would regret now in the heat of the moment in the immediate aftermath. While doing this post, I had a lot of time of reflection and vividly remember getting into one room on campus where a phone was set up for us to call home, sitting with a friend waiting to hear if his dad made it out alive and hearing from family that was safe… and then look at the scenario where our cell phones didn’t work for days and we couldn’t drive on certain roads in the NJ area… so a different world but one that was just as angry, but with a little less tech and open publishing slate as we have today.

@amyvernon @jeffespo Think we’ve seen that SM always beats trad news in a disaster, natural or manmade. And, hate posts SHOULD be remembered

geoffliving It wouldn’t have been pretty.

@SocialSteve @KeithTrivitt thanks it is more on how we have zero filter and how that could have had long-standing reprocussions.

I really appreciate your insights… And you are right, I think that somehow our quest for real-time, social information has eroded our respect for the people who are most impacted by tragic events.

@AmyVernon That’s a silly sentiment, since blogs and sites like MeFi were the only reliable, timely sources of news the entire day.

CynthiaKSeymour I think there is that, but then again there were also so many inaccuracies coming out that day as well and we all know how EVERYONE wants to be first now.

@AmyVernon @krisis with social the Internet remembers everything including hate-posts, which was a popular sentiment on that day as well.
