I am a huge fan of Hugh MacLeod in both of his mediums. On one hand, I’ve got a few prints up of his (including the one below) and on the other, I love his writing style. So when I heard that book #3 was coming out, I preordered it quickly.

I am glad I did.

In Freedom is Blogging in Your Underwear (Amazon affiliate link), MacLeod penned up a thought-provoking book that you can read in a sitting or before your flight touches down at your final destination. The book is also a great mix of Hugh’s two mediums as the chapters open with a quick hit thought and is closed out with 3-4 cartoons that hammer home the point.

You should read this book if:

• you like to think
• you are looking for a reason to push yourself
• you have ever kicked yourself for not acting on a killer idea

Between SXSW and my shoulder surgery, I have been delayed in creating video reviews of the books that I have read. So today, the first delayed review is of Hugh MacLeod’s Evil Plans.

The book was a quick read and really good for inspiration and offering the why not when coming up with a killer idea and executing it. Check out the video above for my full thoughts on it.

During the 2009 Inbound Marketing Summit at Gillette Stadium, a number of speakers referenced Hugh MacLeod’s Ignore Everyone, as a book that anyone working in the social media realm should check out. I took the suggestion and was happy with the read. Not only does the book offer an insight into the Gaping Void’s scribe’s journey from point A as an ad exec to penning a successful blog and cartoonist, but also gives two really important life lessons – Don’t Quit Your Day Job & Never Do a Hobby for Work.

Aside from those two lessons. MacLeod features some of his business card art work as reflections of the chapters themselves.

While this isn’t much of a book review, I would say to check out the book and take the lessons to heart. The biggest takeaway that I took from it was to have a hobby and do it your way, be it a blog, sketching, writing food reviews or making videos. Have fun with it and don’t try to make it all about money, otherwise you’ll be one of those lonely guys at the end of the bar.
