Not only did I start the week out (and still have) a nasty cold, but it was also exciting as it was a daddy-baby bachelor pad week in the Esposito household along with the start of Movember (donate $1 and you can laugh at me). How was your week? In this week’s edition of Five for Friday we’ve got some interesting nuggets that you may have missed or if you are seeing them for the first time are well worth the read. Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Has social media gone the way of the fax machine? – before you go gritting your teeth or yelling and screaming, take a deep breath and give this article from Shel Israel a chance. Social media is moving towards becoming a marketing staple and is getting past the new and sexy stage; ask yourself – what is next.

The Falls vs. Zarella Cage Match – Not sure if you caught this on Thursday afternoon but there was an interesting argument going on via Twitter on Thursday afternoon between Jason Falls and Dan Zarrella. Definitely worth peeping out this post from Dennis Van Staalduinen with the blow by blow commentary.

Chart: One Year of Prison Costs More Than One Year at Princeton – growing up in New Jersey and having family there, this article just makes me sick. A year of incarcerating a prisoner in a Jersey prison costs more than sending a kid to Princeton for a year. Difference is only one of them will probably contribute to society in a positive manner after four years, but owe a hell of a lot more to the government.

(Relatively) Cheat Resistant Rewards and Metrics for Gamification – I love reading posts on social media measurement. This one looks at metrics that avoid gamification for companies from Lithium’s Michael Wu. It’s a smart read that takes some time to sink in but well worth the read.

Wasting Time on Klout and Influence Metrics – before all the hoopla that went on with Klout this week (more here, here, here, here and here) I came across this post from Geoff Livingston. When looking at influence online we can get caught up in the numbers game and superficial scores, but forget about real-world influence. Just think my Klout score is higher than President Obama’s but who can make more things happen?

By the time you read this week’s edition of Five for Friday, I’ll be somewhere over the Atlantic on my way back home to Boston. It was a great week in Barcelona, but was definitely time to come back to see Mrs. & Baby Espo. Have a good one and hopefully we’ll connect next week.

An iPhone 4S Experience That Would Make Steve Jobs Cringe – not sure if you heard, but the new iPhone came out. Unfortunately for some folks in Boston, their coveted new handset came with a nightmare courtesy of UPS. I saw this event unfolding sitting at the airport and was shocked seeing the extent of the inefficiency along with video from Mike Schneider was just, well wow.

M.C. Hammer Announces WireDoo, a Search Start-Up – file this one under Weekend Update with Seth Meyers fodder. What the world really needs at this point in time is another search engine… especially one powered by M.C. Hammer.

Why more celebrities and public figures are turning to social media – while not surprising I find the phenomenon of celebrities hopping on social networks to drop news or updates to their fans fascinating. In some ways it is self-serving for their careers but on the other hand could be crippling to the careers of publicists or gossip rags.

Brands Lose Ground As Facebook Bug Penalizes Third Party Apps – this is a good post from Jason Falls that takes a look at the issue brands are facing with Facebook when updating their pages with third-party tools like HootSuite, CoTweet, etc.; a good piece to read if you own or manage a brand page.

95% Of Facebook Wall Posts Not Answered By Brands – I am somewhat unsurprised with the large number of unanswered posts from brands. While 5 percent response is lower than I would expect, it goes to show that the penetration and maturity of the social media space is not where big business needs it to be for their undivided attention. It also shows that there is work to be done on the corporate side to evangelize the need to focus on customers on their terms.

No I am not five, but am just happy to have two days to just kick back, brew some Oktoberfest and watch some football. Next week is also a short week of sorts as I’ll be headed to Chicago to speak at the WOMMA event as part of the city’s social media week, which I am excited about. While in town, I’ll also get to catch up with Rebecca Denison, Gini Dietrich and Daniel Agee. If you are in the area and want to join in on the action drop me a line. How was your week? Any interesting weekend plans?

Scooby Doo Named Healthiest Cartoon – as a new dad, I am super excited to see that my favorite cartoon has been named the healthiest cartoon for kids to watch. My only question is how healthy are those sandwiches that Scooby and Shaggy eat? Or the substances to build up said appetites.

IBM: Companies need more community managers – this is a great look into the way that IBM sees social evolving and how businesses will need to adapt to continue to be successful.

Football social network Bantr expands from the UK into Spain and Italy – this is not football, but rather the game we Americans call soccer. Now I will never claim to understand the game, but the social network to me is very intriguing as it fills a void that other networks don’t provide. Wonder if MLB, NFL and NBA are keeping tabs on it.

You want results? Time to start reinvesting in people – This is one hell of a smart post from Oliver Blanchard. If you are a manager looking for results, take a look at this post as it may solve some of your problems.

The Swag and Tax Question: An IRS Auditor Reveals the Facts – interesting post on what swag can and probably should cost bloggers…worth a read if you work with bloggers or accept swag on your blog.

Hope you enjoyed this week’s edition of Five for Friday, catch you next week.

Unless you are a Steelers fan, I wish your team good luck and if you are a Steelers fan, well kiss my ass. Aside from the excitement for the first week of the NFL season, I am happy to have this short week come to an end, mostly because it felt like I never had a chance to catch my breath. How was your week? Hopefully it was a good one, here’s this week’s edition of Five for Friday, have a good one and catch you on Monday.

Infographics for Nonprofits: The New Storytelling – While I am not a huge fan of infographics, I was quite pleased when I picked this nugget up from Geoff Livingston’s Twitter stream this week, because it highlighted how these shiny objects can be used for good. In a world of ever-shrinking attention spans, non-profits are able to showcase their story or cause in a bite-sized manner that is less obtrusive than long-winded emails or pitch letters.

White House Creates Crowdsourcing Site – Since the President spoke last night, I found it quite fitting to add this piece from Gini Dietrich on the White House’s crowdsourcing site. There is some lively discussion on the page, and I for one don’t think the site will work and is just a political stunt to reactivate a stagnant donor base.

How Bing Uses CTR in Ranking, and more with Duane Forrester – This article was passed along to me from my buddy on Vistaprint’s search marketing team. What makes it truly interesting is to see how Bing incorporates social sharing into their overall algorithm.

Social Media, Pretend Friends, and the Lie of False Intimacy – All of us in the echo-chamber that is social media need to take a step back and realize that we are a lot like Bilbo Baggins’ birthday speech in Lord of the Rings. We really don’t know many of our connections as well as we thought we did and know too little about the ones we are really close to. Insightful read that is worth peeping out.

Is Barack Obama losing his social media touch? – In a nutshell, I would say yes. This article is worth a read and can serve as a cautionary tale for brands who think that they can turn social media on and off. I am going to write more on this topic next week, so be sure to tune in then.

Advertisers Begin to Look Beyond Facebook and Twitter – the title of this piece is a bit misleading. It is a good study on how advertisers are looking at expanding their social media reach while looking for a greater platform to serve ads on in the space. This is a good post to bookmark if you are into stats for clients.

Tell A Story That Doesn’t Suck – If you are a blogger or do any kind of writing or talking on a regular basis read this story. It explores the value of telling a good story.

The Age of Authenticity Washing – Does authenticity in social media exist? On some levels, I don’t think that it will as everyone has a motive of some sort. Check out the comments in this post from Geoff Livingston for a good conversation – be sure to post your thoughts as well.

A nice example of a mega-brand getting it.

And to be honest that is a damn shame. How was your week? Hopefully it was a good one. Have a safe weekend and stay cool.

‘Social Media Agency’: Fad or Revolution? – this is an interesting look at the sudden onslaught of social media agencies popping up left and right. Do you think they are a fad or something that is here to stay?

Pentagon Will Track Social Media Movements, Memes – earlier this week a lot of folks were creeped out that the government was tracking things on social media along with memes. I actually think that this is pretty damn smart. If you look at the uprisings in the Middle East and how social media played a big part, it would be stupid of any government not to look at what the social generation is publishing free for anyone to see.

I updated my Facebook status from your mom’s computer – this article made it to the list this week because it is just funny. It is a harmless hack on code that can have you logging your Facebook posts from random places like your friend’s mom’s computer.

Authenticity, the real, and the ideal – Chris Penn is a smart dude. If you read one post this week, read this one. It will be worth your while.

This year the man from the frigid North, Danny Brown, takes on some of the more popular myths of social media.

Maybe it was the unbearable heat or the sudden drop in temperature that did it in for me, but who knows? Maybe I am just getting old. Despite the dragging week it was highlighted by two pretty cool things the first was Baby Espo’s Christening over the weekend with oodles of family in town and the second was taking him to see his first movie, the new Winnie the Pooh. How was your week? Any big weekend plans? Hopefully you have a good one and enjoy this week’s edition of Five for Friday.

Why the Facebook feature frenzy will fail – I love this post from Geoff Livingston on the plethora of new features that rolled out from Facebook. If you are like me, you probably realized that the site has become similar to a jalopy, something that gets you what you need, but is clunky and not user friendly. These new features from Zuckerberg and company have only added to the clutter in the FB space.

Google+, Digital Sneetches and Getting Real Value from a New Tool – We all get excited about shiny things, sometimes too excited. This post from Christopher Barger highlights some good “do’s” ad “don’ts” for new shiny objects in the social media landscape.

Commentary: Blogger Compensation – One of the biggest topics in PR is the compensation of bloggers. To me it is OK to offer products for an honest review, but paying for a positive review is unethical and well not PR. The comments in this post are great and I give a big hat tip to the artist formerly known as PR Cog for posting it and being open and conversational in the comments.

Social media gurus, real work and diversity – Somewhat of a rant, but it does not ring any less true in this post from Oliver Blanchard. If you read one post in this week’s edition, this should be it.

Twitter Rejects A $25,000 Check It Rightfully Earned – This post made the cut because it goes to show how far off Twitter is from having a true business model. Seriously you can’t account for $25,000 that you earned?

On one hand we took Baby Espo for his trial run-through at daycare (time has flown) which made me both excited and sad. My team also headed to the New England Direct Marketing Association where we took home awards for top Twitter strategy (second year in a row) and third place for overall social media strategy. We also got to hang at the Museum of Science and see some dinosaurs; the triceratops to the left had his eyes on the hardware. With all that going on, I almost forgot that we’re on the verge of a long weekend. What do you have planned for the Fourth of July? No matter what you have on tap, be safe. Catch you all next week and here’s this week’s edition of Five for Friday.

Community Management is the New Black – This is a great post on what really goes into being a community manager from Lauren Vargas. The title is very hot right now and some even state that it might be dead, I for one disagree, and think we can all learn a lot from this savvy community manager who has held the title since 2006.

How ‘branding’ is ruining journalism – I love this take on personal brands from the Washington Post. Many people look at the “I” in everything before building up a solid reputation to go on. It is a worthwhile read no matter what side of the personal brand debate you fall on.

Journalists, PR Pros and Bloggers, Oh My! – Jeremy Pepper is a smart dude that I really enjoy conversing with on Tuesday nights in #PR20chat. If you don’t follow Jeremy, I suggest you do it now. This post looks at the future of journalism and the creation of content.

When #measurePR met Klout – What do you think of Klout? Many love it while others hate it, I think they might be onto something, but at the same time know it is not the end all be all or even close to it. One thing that they do have down is educating folks on their product. This post from Shonali Burke recaps a #measurePR chat where Klout was the soup de jour.

Social networking utopia isn’t coming – This is an interesting read on tribes and numbers of intimate connections one can really have and questions the kumbaya nature of social media – worth reading if you are still stuck at the office and looking to kill time.

While nothing horrible happened, I am more looking forward to the weekend. For starters some of my best friends from Jersey are coming up to meet Baby Espo and I have a nice Father’s Day event to attend on Saturday at the NE Aquarium with the good folks at Pampers. As I am writing this I am also recovering from a food coma and wondering if that full rack of ribs yesterday was a good idea – for the record I say yes, but the meat sweats a sleep later may be telling me otherwise. How the heck was your week? Have any good weekend plans? Hopefully you have a good one and I’ll catch you next week. Enjoy this week’s edition of Five for Friday.

10 Tips for New Community Managers – There is no question that community management is one of the hot job titles right now. The big question on many people’s minds though is what the heck does it mean and what does this person do? In this post from my favorite community manager out there, Janet Aronica, you can get a sense and an education on the topic from her top 10 tips.

Does Google Use Facebook Shares to Influence Search Rankings? – For a while now folks have been debating the value of a like on Facebook. This has ranged from the value of an individual fan to what it is worth in search engines. In this post from SEOMoz, it appears that likes may actually impact the value that Google and Bing put on your sight. While this is interesting it may also have been a test from Google as they rolled out their +1 button.

ROA = Return on Attention – I like this post a lot. It is not because it just introduces a new measurement that also brings the tried and true long-tail theory back into the picture as applied to social media.

Twitter Users Want Businesses to Answer Them – Would you believe that eight out of 10 Twitter users want brands to answer their questions that they place on the 140-character microblogging service? Well in this latest research from InboxQ it shows that and some other cool stats worth peeping out.

Where Does Social Belong? – I loved this post from my pal Gini Dietrich on where social media belongs within an organization. On top of giving her take, there was a rather intelligent and spirited conversation in the comments that touches all areas of this issue and I suggest anyone in the social space check it out.

I got to do some tedious research that was good, but tedious none the less and will help prove some more social value. The week in Boston was kind of warm as well and hopefully the Thunderstorms from yesterday keep it cold through the weekend. How was your week? Hopefully you’ve got some good weekend plans, catch you on the flipside and enjoy this week’s edition of Five for Friday.

Pixie Dust & The Mountain of Mediocrity – This may be my new favorite analogy for social media. In general there is no amount of magic or spin that can make you rock or be successful in the space it is all about hard work and making meaningful connections that translate into action. This post calls that out in some lovely terms.

Eleven Reasons Domino’s Turnaround Campaign Worked – let’s face it, at the end of the day I love seeing good campaigns get the light they deserve. Many of you will remember that Dominos Pizza tasted horrible and some idiot kids working there did some gross things with their food. To me the only good thing about them was the retired Noid, but recently they made a big PR/Brand/Advertising push to show the changes that they were making to benefit their customer experience. Some people say the ‘za is actually quite good – being allergic to tomatoes, I couldn’t tell you, but their bacon and cheese white pie is delicious.

The Role of Public Relations in Influence – This is a great post from my good buddy Eric Berto (Geek Giant on Twitter) on influence and PR. The part that I like about it is that it touches on areas that we don’t often think about when it comes to influence. There are no rainbows or unicorns, but rather three vehicles of change and influential levers that you can pull that are not on Twitter or Facebook.

Social media’s slice of the marketing pie – This post takes a look at a number of results on marketing spend on social media – definitely worth peeping out.

Why you should be paying attention to the CDC’s tobacco free campaign – I hadn’t seen this commercial or social campaign from the CDC, but I am really a fan of the campaign after seeing this post from Chuck Hemann. In all honesty I am not a fan of smoking, although I do enjoy a cigar a few times a year. The side effects and cancer risk is huge so big ups to the CDC for this campaign.

This was one interesting week for me. Strated out pretty slow, but then was broken up on Wednesday with the awesomeness that is jury duty. While I was not selected to serve on the jury, I did hear a lawyer spin one hell of a story about a kid who was in for drug and weapon charges that included him making the sounds of sirens talking about his own DUI and I think there was an interpreter in there somewhere along the way. So even if we had been called no one in the jury room could have given the kid a fair shake. After that it was on to a Vistaprint bowling event, let me tell you that bowling lefty is no fun at all and I only got eight pins in our 10-minute speed bowling round – translated as I suck. To make the festivities more enticing, well we have a friend in from Baltimore (@miniterp follow her) and my family is coming up to see Baby Espo. So how was your week? Any big weekend plans? Hope it is a good one, enjoy this week’s edition of Five for Friday and catch you Monday.

Facebook admits hiring PR firm to smear Google – yes I know you probably ready this already and are sick of it, but it hits both key focuses of this blog. It also baffles me that Facebook’s PR team thought that they could get away with it. Hopefully this is the first of many interesting twists to the feud between these online giants.

House Speaker John Boehner’s Chief Page Administrator Shares Facebook Strategy – I know that it is impolite to talk politics at dinner, but hey you came to my joint so I am sharing. There is no question that social media was huge in our last election and looks as if it will continue to grow. This is an interesting interview with the top Republican’s communications director Don Seymour, regardless of your party affiliate it’s worth a look.

The Difference Between Engaged and Engaging – This is a great post from Danny Brown, short, sweet and to the point. I only wish that other folks who write about engagement could do it in so many words.

Influence: The Face of the Facebook Revolution? – The revolutions in the Middle East were filled with everyday people who used social technologies to get their voices out there. This piece from Geoff Livingston explores this good phenomenon.

Nobody cares about your damn blog – This post should be a must read for anyone thinking about starting a blog or anyone who owns or pens one.

First week back after we welcomed our little bundle of joy into the world so needless to say, I have been running on fumes a bit. I am rambling I Know, but I blame the lack of sleep . How was your week?

Hopefully as action packed and fun as mine.

I will also be flying into Chicago on Monday for a speaking gig on Tuesday and would love to connect with any readers who live in the area. So please hit me up if you want to meet up.

So without further adieu, here is this week’s edition of Five for Friday brought to you by Monster Energy.

Social Isn’t About Advertising Or PR – This is a great response post from Gini Dietrich to an article titled PR Agencies are Ruining Facebook. Unfortunately there is still a line in the sand and folks just can’t see beyond it or decide on a way to have everyone working together. The comments section is also filled with very smart commentary on the subject.

Who Owns Social Media? – To echo the sentiment t of Gini’s post, this piece from Marketing Profs gets down to the following line Why can’t we all just get along?

4 PR lessons from ‘Saved by the Bell’ – I love Saved by the Bell and any post with that in the title will make this list. With that said, my buddy Arik Hanson offers some great PR lessons with humor sprinkled in with some speed. Definitely check it out.

7 Status Updates That Will Get You Laid! – OK I am not going to lie here, this post made the list because it will never work and has to be a late April Fool’s Day joke right?

Are You Following a Bot? – This is a really smart and almost scary post from the Atlantic. How do you follow people? For me it is mostly people I have conversations with or I find interesting. It looks like the robots are getting smarter, which in turn means that we have to work harder to avoid the crap in the Twitterville.

What’s happening everyone? I am hoping that you are in a better place than I am right now. Yesterday morning I went under the knife to get my shoulder repaired and am now pretty heavily medicated and will be for the next week or so. Instead of taking advice from folks that said look at the genius of Charlie Sheen, I am taking a small break from the keyboard to recover and handing over the keys to some good friends who will offer you some awesome content that you should check out and be sure to follow them and read their blogs as well. Here’s this week’s edition of Five for Friday, have a great weekend!

Four new Twitter poems – OK this post just gets me giddy and nerded out. No matter how hard I try, I am still an English major at heart and smile when I see things like this.

Facebook Tests Ads Targeted At Status Updates – I am geeked about this for two reasons. The first is that it makes Facebook into a real competitor to Google within its own network so it’s interesting to see. On the other hand, this should make privacy aficionados get their panties in a knot; because their updates are being used I marketing…kind of like the Gmail complaints.

9 Keys To Communicating Diplomatically – The one thing that I suck at is diplomacy. I am working on it, but have a certain personality that kind of fights back against my efforts. So I am always looking for ways to improve that aspect of my game. If you are like me, or want a refresher on building up your diplomacy skills, peep out this post.

Is a dirty mind a sharper mind? – There are two reasons why this article made the cut 1) I have a mind in the gutter and 2) this is for all those people who said that said mind was good for nothing. Enjoy the read and yes it is safe for work consumption.

Social Media Has Made You Lazy – I love this post from C.C. Chapman, and unfortunately it shows the shitty side of the PR industry. Tools are great, but in a way they have made us extremely lazy. Case in point, these two email pitches that he references. Definitely check this out if you are in PR or hate PR.

Man was this a whirlwind of a week for me. For starters, my orthopedic surgeon gave me some bad news – my shoulder needs surgery, but we set a date and well, next month I will be looking for some guest posters so if you are interested ping me and we can set something up. Other than that it was pretty uneventful round these parts, how about you? Hope you have a great weekend, here’s this week’s edition of Five for Friday.

Kenneth Cole’s Social Media Marketing Lesson – In case you didn’t know, the fashion designer made a major snafu last week. He also set an example of a company doing social media wrong. I have plenty of objections to people hashtag spamming, but it is pretty commonplace, hopefully his distasteful Tweet on the Egypt thread will have companies think hard about strategy after the backlash.

Twitter Starts Selling Its Data By The Tweet – This is pretty cool for the developer community or folks looking to scrape certain data from Twitter. Instead of an overwhelming fire hose it looks like people can now get niche info from the 140 character platform.

Why Some Twitter Posts Catch On, and Some Don’t – Ever wondered why your awesome Tweet didn’t catch on? Well you aren’t alone. This piece from the New York Times has some interesting research on Tweet sharing and influence and should definitely get a read.

Banned Super Bowl Commercials – I always love when the banned commercials come up following the Super Bowl. These are definitely worth watching for a laugh and would have definitely made the Super Bowl that much better. Below is one of my favorites from the piece.

Wannabe Cool Kids Aim to Game the Web’s New Social Scorekeepers – On one hand I see a ton of potential with Klout and similar services. On the other I see the sad part of our society both IRL & online – seriously Brittney Spears did you really whine to see why you weren’t important? Moving forward I can see this going either horribly awesome with hyper-targeting or just another case of the “rich” getting rich, gamers gaming the system and marketing spam. What do you think?

This was one busy week. For starters we had yet another awesome winter storm that made driving to rehab a boat ton of fun. That was followed up by some real awesomeness as I sat in on a panel for #PRStudchat to discuss social media policies and then yesterday evening, Vistaprint hosted their first ever event for local micro businesses to discuss marketing and I was able to give a crash course on social media. So it’s Friday and I am looking forward to a relaxing weekend and hopefully my brother gets a good game and a win as he travels to Pittsburgh to watch his J-E-T-S take on the Steelers. How was your week, any big weekend plans? Have a safe one and enjoy this week’s edition of Five for Friday.

What if Tunisia had a revolution, but nobody watched? – Mrs. Espo passed this one along to me from her daily news at her employer and I found it quite interesting. I have heard of the Tunisian revolts and have followed along some on online sites, Twitter and peeped some videos, but didn’t realize that it was not getting as much airplay overall. While I do not think that overall change or social revolution will occur over a social platform, this may be an instance where it can be used to leverage traditional media to build exposure.

Charity worker fired over Facebook comments – my real beef with the video below is that the guy is saying all the right things. Without a clear policy in place, you can’t make up rules as you go along. Should he have been smarter, yes, but then again so should the company.

Please ReTweet This – How many times have you included {pls RT], DM folks for retweets or just asked for someone to share something? How many times has it been asked of you? I can safely say that it has probably happened a lot, but is it ethical or right? I tend to only RT things when I find them useful to the community at large or if something made me think. Asking in some circles is just as good as begging to get hits, visitors, followers, etc. a quid pro quo if you will that leaves me feeling dirty, what about you?

Unmasking the social media “expert” – This is the first of a four part series, but I am very happy to see a traditional media outlet offering its readers insight into hiring a social media consultant and if it is right for their business. It is not only awesome but also responsible as many folks think that they need social media and might be getting sold a tub of snake oil from an opportunistic person with guru or ninja on their business card.

How To Build A Crappy Twitter Profile – You know you have seen them, bad Twitter profiles that do nothing for you. Maybe you have a friend who has one or get stalked by one or two of them. If you are new to the Twitter game, be sure to follow this guide to the letter to have an awesome Twitter profile. Please note that should have been read tongue-in-cheek, like this hilarious post.
