A social media awakening from Cory Booker

Cory Booker Suffolk Law A few weeks back, I attended Suffolk University Law School’s commencement ceremonies in honor of Mrs. Esposito taking her first step towards becoming an official lawyer. I was happy to see that there was a fellow New Jersey native giving the opening remarks – Mayor Cory Booker.

If his name sounds familiar, it should. Mr. Booker is the mayor of Newark, he also publicly feuded with Conan O’Brien on behalf of his city. But I am not going to write about that one. Growing up a 20 minute drive from Brick City, I knew all about Booker and his accomplishments as a mayor along with the struggles he faced (click here for Booker’s bio). The one thing I did not realize was how powerful a speaker he is. Throughout the 45-60 minute speech this phrase stuck with me and really hit home when thinking about applying social mediums to the workplace (click here for the full speech):

We live in a world that is going to want to constrain you and confine you and make you stuck and paralyzed in paradigms of what is. You need to understand that you were not born to fit in, to go along, to get along. You were born to manifest your truth, your divinity, your genius, your authenticity. This is what the world yearns for right now. Not people who are accepting of what is and try to conform to that, but who are demanding of what can be and what must be and what should be and want to let that power of love inside of themselves out into the world.

This writing takes the quote out of context, but it really applied to how my role has transcended from traditional PR guy to working in the social space day in and day out. In the past I was focused on PR and now am really moving into something more. Instead of relying on the media to get the messaging out there, I’m directly conversing with the public. Kind of putting the public back into public relations and becoming more of a customer evangelist. This road that was once less traveled is getting paved smoother each day that passes.

If you take out the religious overtones of the verbiage and get down to the line about getting the truth out there, it is what we all really want to do. Despite the feeling of being on an island in marketing and PR organizations, those in the trenches are finding rewards bucking the status quo. Social platforms have enabled us to make a direct brand impression. It’s a tough fight that often feels like pushing a stone up a steep inclined hill. However our passion for engaging n communications drives us to overcome these hurdles.

The words inspired me to do better things while engaging. How will you spread the good word?
