Intel's Fan Plan

Earlier today I came across an ad on Facebook that actually caught my eye. These ads usually don’t grab my attention at all, this one stood out because it was for Intel and the copy said become a fan to help lower the Cyber Monday price.

After clicking the ad, I came to this Facebook landing page.

The reason of this plug is not to be a pure plug for Intel or their computers, I am actually looking at a number of Dell options now, but rather a great use of crowd sourcing and social media to help boost a sales-driven campaign.

While the T&C seem pretty cut and dry, I wonder how great this discount will really be.

What is the Intel® Cyber Monday Fan Plan?
The Intel Cyber Monday Fan Plan is a group-buying initiative designed to save you money on cool new computers powered by Intel processors. As more people become fans, the lower the prices drop.

How does it work?
It’s easy. Just become a fan of the Intel Fan Plan on Facebook, and you’re automatically helping drive down prices on the three ultra-thin laptops included in the Intel Cyber Monday event. Then go to the application tab “Intel Fan Plan!” and enter. Then, invite your friends to become fans too, so they can help lower the prices even more.

The day before Cyber Monday, you will receive a message through Facebook with a savings coupon and a link to a retailer. The savings coupon is only valid for the day of the sale and for the computers featured on the linked page.

When does the coupon expire?
You can use the savings coupon at any time on Cyber Monday, November 30, 2009, between 12:31am-11:59pm Eastern Standard Time.

How much of a discount will I get?
The final price depends on how many people become Facebook fans of the Intel Fan Plan. As more people become fans, the lower the prices will drop. That’s why you need to get your friends signed up too!

Where can I find more information about the processors inside the featured laptops?
You can learn more about ultra-thin laptops and the Intel® processors that power them on the Intel website.

What is a solid-state hard drive (SSD)?
The amazing Acer® Aspire Timeline AS3810T, which is one of the ultra-thin laptops you can save on through the Intel Fan Plan, features a solid-state hard drive, or SSD. An SSD replaces a traditional hard disk drive (HDD) with added performance, lower power consumption and higher reliability. Intel’s unique technology for SSDs also enables longer battery life and faster system responsiveness. Plus, SSDs have no moving parts, virtually eliminating the risk of mechanical failure.

Whom do I contact with additional questions?
If your question wasn’t covered here, please click on the feedback link at the bottom of the Intel Fan Plan page.

My guess is that they have a great discount already planned out, and this is a more targeted offer for the three products in the creative. I wonder how they will spin the discount on the 30th, but will just have to wait and see.

Do you think this is just another marketing ploy? or am I too cynical in thinking that th deal won’t be crowd sourced?
