Five for Friday – New Year's Day Edition

Image - USA Today

Happy New Year! Now that it is out of the way, is it me or did last year fly by? There were a lot of big happenings both locally and abroad that kind of took everyone by surprise. Some good, some bad but all are in the past and it’s time to look forward to the New Year. Hopefully the hangover from last night isn’t too bad, if it is here’s to some stories easing the pain.

Customized Columns for Valuable Retweeting – What is the value of a RT? We all do it and at times don’t even look if it’s from one of our friends. The real question is what is the impact of said RT and who benefits from it.

Poor Customer Service Costs $338.5B Per Year in Lost Business – We all know how it feels on the other end of the phone with problems with a company, but this number is still staggering. Hopefully the embracing of social media from companies of all sizes will help this number shrink.

Please stop creating a Facebook group or fanpage for EVERY SINGLE THING in the world. Thank you. – I love this rant from Sarah Evans. After helping my family change their Facebook profiles over Christmas to be more secure and private with FB’s new policies, I was shocked to see how many group invitations that that they had. It was even more obnoxious when I stopped and checked mine after a few days off the grid. Groups up the Wazoo – so I plead with her on this to cut the crap.

PRWatch: What Happens When PR People Have More Traffic Than The Reporters – Interesting question, especially in a world where there is a premium on influence. Kind of funny how a flack’s personal blog or SM account can dwarf a journo’s but still has to pitch due to the whole pay to play conundrum. Where will the line be drawn?

PR & The Ninja Turtles – Being a child of the ‘80’s I would be doing a disservice to you all by not sharing this post from my pal Mike Schaffer. The Ninja Turtles was one of my favorite cartoons growing up, but I would have never thought that I would be able to compare them to my role in PR. With Mike’s analysis, I would probably say that I am a mix between Donatello and Raphael. Which one are you?

Happy New Year, Jeff!!! Honored to be included in this list! I'd like to think I tend towards Leonardo a bit, but I think it's important to retain pieces of all of them to be a well-rounded pro.
