Five for Friday 5.14

Very glad to say that this week is just hours from being over as it was filled with awesomeness – annual reviews, longwinded run-around projects and more headaches that Advil can handle. So it is good to have Friday here, plus later will be dinner with my good bud Kate. So while I did not get to read up on things like a normal week, here are five great articles that crossed my radar when I popped my head up to read.

Papa John’s, Mountain Dew, use social media to advertise – This piece comes way of USA Today. While the headline is focused on social media, it can be seen as a larger marketing piece where established companies are looking to exploit new mediums not only for short term successes, but also to position themselves as thought leaders and at the top of the marketing game. To that I say bravo chaps – must also be nice having those budgets.

Twitter’s meltdown today should help remind users — followers aren’t everything – For a post I am working for on PRBC next week on what to measure in SM, the Twitter meltdown couldn’t have come at a better time. Too many people focus on the number of followers instead of the meaningful conversations within network.

Infographic – the history of Facebook’s default privacy settings – Looking for another reason to call Facebook evil? Well look no further than this infograph. Kind of scary if you ask me.

Are You Making These 5 Social Measurement Mistakes? – Let’s face it with the land grab to get into social media, there were a lot of mistakes made and things that would have been done better in hindsight. However that is no longer an excuse it isn’t new anymore and can be looked at like other platforms. Are you making any of these mistakes?

Can we be better strangers? – While I am no fan of Shakespeare, I do find this post quite intriguing. Everyone always said talking to strangers was bad, but in SM who do we really know? Great ideas on becoming a better acquaintance.
