Five for Friday

So this week really flew by. Partially because I was swamped in the office, but also because it is starting to get warmer outside and is slated to hit 60 degrees today. Not summer or even spring, but it is really a nice tease of what’s to come. How was your week?  Hope you have some great weekend plans, catch you on Monday and enjoy this week’s edition of Five for Friday.

PR Measurement Formula #Fails? – One of the problems with PR measurement is that all theories have flaws in them. What works for you might not be perfect me. This article from Todd Defren looks at a bunch of formulas and don’t worry it is more theory than numbers.

The dirty little secrets of search – Say it with me, “black hat” is bad. This is a great piece on J.C. Penney’s linkbuilding that had them rank high on Google that has put a spotlight on the dirty realm of shady linkbuilding to cheat the Google algorithm.

The mounting challenges of an established social content market – One of the biggest “wins” that I have had in the social space in the past few months was getting connected with Geoff Livingston. I am not going to get all man-crushy here, but the guy runs an awesome blog with UNIQUE ideas. This piece offers a look at competing with content farms, peer sharing and breaking the A-List glass ceiling if you will.

How Small Businesses Are Using Social Media – I like pictures and small business so it was something that I had to share because it’s just pretty interesting:

Thank you, Jeff. It has been a great pleasure getting to know you , and your comments and insights are thoughtful. I appreciate the link, too!

Now on that infographic… Why do so many small businesses use Twitter? I don’t get it. Not at all. Not one bit. More than Facebook. In reality Twitter hits so many less people, I am not sure I could go there first if I was starting greenfield and in a biz that was not marketing/online media centric. Just my $.02.

@geoffliving Geoff likewise. The reason that I think Twitter has more of an appeal to the SMB is for the service type places. The sitye’s local search is free and just requires human time to scout out folks looking for a service. So if you have someone who is a casual user to chat with friends and you are talking about lunch or a beer after work, its a pretty easy way to respond and get new business.

Facebook does have more penetration, but it costs money to advertise. Sure it is a bigger community builder but it takes time. In the surveys that Vistaprint has done on micro businesses it was the winner.
