Five for Friday 7.9

Summer TimeHow was your week? Mine was, well not a week, but two working business days. This post will be posted as I get ready for my brother-in-law’s wedding so the articles are from earlier in the week. Despite being short, my week was busy and I made my debut speaking. If you want to help me get better, please feel free to visit my post from yesterday and critique my speaking. I am a big boy so all feedback is greatly appreciated. So without any further rambling, here is this week’s edition of Five for Friday.

Are you really giving thought to starting a blog? – this post comes way of my Internet sister, Kate Ottavio, and poses some really good points for folks looking to start up a blog. Sure anyone can start one for free, but how do you make it last?

Making Yourself UnemployableJulien Smith is co-author of Trust Agents, but also one hell of a blogger that I find very insightful and thought provoking. This post offers some thoughts on career choices and if we are settling. That word irks and scares me. How about you? Will you settle?

Sysmos Acquired by Marketwire – Now this news was not surprising at all. The email marketing companies started the buying frenzy and other industries have followed suit. These acquisitions are all about making a product offering multi-dimensional. For Marketwire (client of theirs) this gives them analytics that take a deeper dive into social releases and provide a better offering for their client. While I think it’s interesting I wonder how much it will improve the client services and product offering as releases and social media are two different properties all together.

Is a social media bubble ready to burst? –  the world is full of bubbles. The often burst at the wrong time after growing too large, don’t believe me, ask the Dot Com investors. Now while I don’t think the artist currently called social media will fit that bill, I also would be naive to say that there wasn’t the chance of an evolution. This article offers some reasons why we should be ready for a bust and things we should avoid doing.

How Fast Company Confused Ego with Influence – Now I am not sure if you saw Fast Company’s new campaign,  but if you did not, I urge you not to enter. Instead of being a holistic look at the levels of influence by connecting Twitter and Facebook accounts to the site, the site is a ploy to build links back to the Fast Company website that the people who get the most folks to click their link are deemed uber-influential. Amber Naslund offers a great rant into how she was also misled. Be sure to read the comments for the piece as well.
