<p>For businesses this is where logos come in. A lot of money is spent to identify the heart and soul of what the business is. So it is safe to say that everyone gets what these logos represent right? Well not always as we can see in this video with a 5-year old.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Like many of you, Mrs. Espo and I tuned in to watch the Super Bowl last night. And, while we had no vested interest in either team in the game, we were interested to see what kinds of ads the advertisers threw out there.</p>
<p>Instead of critiquing or waxing poetically on one or the other, we decided on a list of our favorite five commercials while driving home last night.</p>

<p>Now while it starts out awesome with the guy talking about how good the coffee is, the commercial was ruined with the influx of the company’s new breakfast sandwiches.  I understand that you need to sell your new line of sandwiches, but they don’t fit the content of the ad. It loses its viral and organic feel by shoving a message for sandwiches down your throat. Hopefully they can continue to incorporate UGC into their marketing mix as its pretty cool and may give them an edge against Dunkin and Starbucks.</p>

<p>Puma has been doing some pretty cool things lately. And while this one is not <a href="http://jeffesposito.com/2010/02/17/love-is-viral-at-least-for-puma/" target="_blank">Savage Garden cool</a>, it is a very revolutionary idea in not only packaging but also in corporate sustainability.</p>
<p>By removing the boxes, Puma may save some coin, however when adding the bag concept, the company reduces their waste and also can showcase the impact the impact it makes on their carbon &#8220;paw&#8221; print. The bags also serve as a bonus for the customers and can be used to carry shoes or other items after the shoes are taken out.</p>
<p>Bravo Puma.</p>

<p>Over the past few months I have written a few posts on Tiger and what he should do from a PR standpoint (<a href="http://jeffesposito.com/2010/02/18/some-pr-advice-for-tiger-woods/" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="http://prbreakfastclub.com/2010/03/24/what-a-great-move/" target="_blank">here</a>) and also offered a <a href="http://jeffesposito.com/2010/02/24/think-nike-would-do-this-with-tiger/" target="_blank">suggestion to Nike</a>. While none of my advice was taken, the shoe-maker did create a very powerful new commercial tying in with the golfer&#8217;s return to the sport.</p>
<p>Using his late father&#8217;s voice, Tiger&#8217;s top sponsor asks the tough question and also chides the golfer. While it is not the public tongue lashing that the PGA gave him or dropping him like other sponsors have, Nike gets the point across and shows a somber-looking Tiger faced with a disappointed tone and asking a question we all want answered &#8211; did you learn anything?</p>

Now when I saw this commercial yesterday online, it didn&#8217;t really come across as all that appealing. However when vegging out in front of the tube, I could see the real beauty behind the commercial.</p>
<p>Like most e-retailers 1-800 Contacts relies on the Web to sell their products.  There are many products that can get away with the lack of personality of the Internet. Buying glasses and contacts is a personal transaction. You need these things to see so there has to be a level of trust to make the transaction.</p>
<p>This over-dramatization of the guy being special, the commercial brings a personality to the brand. It says hey, we care about you and hey &#8211; you&#8217;re special. It&#8217;s so cheesy that you can&#8217;t help but feel warm and fuzzy.</p>
<p>For a brand this is a good connotation, because at the end of the day, the vendor is being trusted with your sight. I don&#8217;t wear contacts and don&#8217;t plan on wearing them, but my wife orders from them so I generally have a good opinion of the company.</p>
<p>While the commercial gives me that good feeling, I also wonder if it tries too hard. It kind of seems like they are trying too hard. Does this over-compensation for being special hide something about the online contact vendor? Or is it just my cynical nature kicking in?</p>

I saw this <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqTEkVR2ZeU&amp;feature=player_embedded" target="_blank">video</a> yesterday on <a href="http://mashable.com">Mashable</a> and was immediately drawn into the synchronized dancing of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_mob" target="_blank">Flash Mob</a>.  Heck if I didn&#8217;t know that it was an H&amp;M video, I would have been floored when the only branding was at the very end.</p>
<p>Now while I like the video&#8217;s embrace of the Flash Mob, I wonder if it is a sustainable marketing tool. For starters, other competing brands are seen in the video &#8211; Macy&#8217;s and Sacks &#8211; in a natural setting. Do you want to give the competition more face time?  I would also  assume that the kids were wearing H&amp;M gear &#8211; but I can&#8217;t be sure.</p>
<p>While those questions center on the brand, I also wonder about the validity of the Flash Mob. Since there were multiple camera angles, you have to wonder if the audience was in on the event or if they were innocent bystanders. Also since it&#8217;s an ad do they need to sign waivers?</p>
<p>If the group was in on the secret does this remove the essence of the Flash Mob and become just another catchy advertising ploy? What do you think?</p>
